What is muscle loss?
Muscle loss, also called muscle atrophy, is when muscles waste away and your body loses muscle tissues. This lean tissue loss leads to decreased strength and mobility.
There are two main causes of muscle wasting:
- Aging - As we get older, muscle fibers are lost and muscle protein synthesis declines. The result is natural age-related loss of muscle mass, referred to as sarcopenia.
- Inactivity - Without regular strength training and protein intake, your body breaks down muscle faster than it's built back up. Bed rest, injuries, and illnesses can spur rapid muscle loss.
Early Signs and Effects of Muscle Loss
How do you know if you're losing precious lean muscle mass? Here are key signs and effects:
- Fatigue and weakness - Declining strength and stamina for daily activities.
- Weight gain - Less metabolically-active muscle means reduced calories burned. The scale tips up as more fat accumulates.
- Frequent injuries - Weakened areas like knees and back are more prone to strains or tears.
- Postural changes - Flabby, rounded shoulders and forward head tilt as postural muscles decline.
